question regarding weird problem

For the past couple months I’ve experienced a problem with mouth
dryness which has become constant.  This seems to be associated
with a white or greyish white, thick coating which coats my tongue.
The sensation is one of extreme astringency and is most noticeable
after I eat or drink, particularly if I don’t immediately floss and
brush.  Just brushing my teeth isn’t enough: I also have to brush
my tongue; this removes most of the coating but it comes back quickly.
Even if I don’t eat or drink it will return in half a day with equal
severity.  It seems to have gotten worse, i.e., it is present all the
time and more severe.  I often find myself taking breaths through an
open mouth because this fleetingly reduces the sensation.  Associated
with this sensation of oral astringency is a kind of tactile sensation
which is rather unpleasant but difficult to describe: it’s vaguely
analogous to a "nails on chalkboard" feeling.  Just drying my hands
on a paper towel is an unpleasant experience, but to some degree
it is often present simply as a kind of ambient sensation.

Prior to this I had experienced a metallic aftertaste for several
months which was associated with eating and drinking but which
lingered afterwards.  There was no sensation of dryness or
"tactile" sensation then.  Now that’s gone and this problem has
appeared.

I also have tinnitus (a variable symptom complex including hearing
distortions and hypersensitivity to certain sounds, not just
ringing in the ears), but this precedes these other problems by
at least six months and may not be related.  However, I have
noticed a kind of peculiar cross-linkage between the experience of
the "tactile" sensation and the tinnitus, so that (for example)
when the oral problems are particularly bad the tinnitus seems to
be as well and listening to music seems to trigger the tactile
sensation as well as causing the aural discomfort which has
always been associated with the tinnitus even before any oral
problems occurred.

I’m a 32 year old white male who has not been diagnosed with
any particular problems apart from this.  (I have been to
ear specialists about the tinnitus but not about the comparatively
recent other problems which were not present at the time.  I find
it difficult to go to a doctor with an obscure problem like this
which, though quite unpleasant, is difficult to describe without
it sounding entirely trivial ("dry mouth").  I probably have
elevated blood pressure (how high I’m not sure since I haven’t
had it taken for some time) and am overweight (50 pounds) and
sedentary.

Readers of sci.med.pathology, update June 28, 1997.

                                            June 28, 1997.

Dear reader,

Here is the update of the list of employees working in different
Pathology laboratories and other related workfields.
They want to exchange experiences in this workfield via this medium
and/or E-mail.

I’ve got one or more responds from the following persons (in
alphabetical order):

This list is also available via the WWW:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/cvisser/scipath.htm

Because some people have changed their E-mail address without
notifying me, I’ve deleted these entries. Please keep in mind to send
me an E-mail when information needs to be changed.

Thanks in advance.
