Tattooing a dead body

Hi,

I’m writing a crime book and wondered if there would be a way to tell
if a victim of a homicide was tattooed before or after death?

I have had no success searching the internet.

I wondered if anyone could give their specialist opinion?

TIA

Philip

There is an inflammatory reaction following tatooing, as well as mild
scarring in many cases. "Scabbing" occurs in new tattoos in response to
the insult to tissue in a living person. This is not going to occur in a
dead body. Inks and dyes alter in their intensity with aging of the
tattoo this would be advantageous in aging the tattoo.

Hi, Anybody got any more help for me? OK with the inflamatory response
and the scabbing I can tell between a *recent* tatto on a live person
and a tattoo carried out after death. But can I definitively tell if
the tattoo is 6 months old or after death?

    TIA
